How to Easily Grow Mushrooms with a SHROOMBOX Using the Monotub Method

If you’ve ever thought about growing your own mushrooms, the process is probably easier than you suspect, especially with a SHROOMBOX. Think of it as your personal, all-in-one indoor mushroom greenhouse. No complicated gear, no constant tinkering . . . just set it up, follow a few steps, and grow your mushrooms!

One of the most popular ways to use your SHROOMBOX is the monotub method. It’s simple, efficient, and works great even if you’ve never grown anything before.

Step 1: Setup and Colonization

The first stage of mushroom growing is called colonization, which is when your mushroom mycelium spreads throughout the substrate (the nutrient-rich growing medium). Here’s how to handle this stage with your monotub inside a SHROOMBOX:

  1. Prepare your colonized substate and place it inside the SHROOMBOX.

  2. Cover the vents on your SHROOMBOX with the vinyl monotub vent covers. This limits fresh air exchange and helps trap carbon dioxide, which mushrooms actually prefer during colonization.

  3. Keep it dark. Unplug the USB LED light. Light signals mushrooms to fruit, so you don’t want that yet.

  4. No air pump or fan. Leave both unplugged. Still air and higher CO₂ levels are key during this phase.

Once your substrate is 100% colonized—you’ll see it’s fully covered in bright white mycelium—it’s time for the exciting part: fruiting.

Step 2: Switching to Fruiting Conditions

Fruiting is when your mushrooms finally start growing into the familiar shapes you can harvest. Here’s how to switch over:

  1. Remove the vinyl monotub vent covers from the SHROOMBOX. This increases fresh air exchange and lowers CO₂ levels, triggering mushroom formation.

  2. Plug in the USB LED light. Mushrooms use light as a growth signal, so aim for a light cycle that mimics daylight. We recommend 12hrs/12hrs.

  3. Plug in the air pump and fan. This keeps fresh air moving and helps maintain optimal humidity.

From here, you’ll start seeing tiny mushroom “pins” forming within days. Keep your environment stable, and they’ll quickly grow to harvest size.

Why the SHROOMBOX Makes It Easy

A SHROOMBOX is designed to keep your mushrooms in the right environment without constant babysitting. You don’t have to be a scientist or a farmer, you just follow the two simple stages:

  • Colonization: Dark, still air, CO₂-rich.

  • Fruiting: Light, fresh air, stable humidity.

And that’s it! With a monotub setup for your SHROOMBOX, you’re giving your mushrooms everything they need to thrive with almost no hassle.
